Really Writing

I haven't posted here in ages. How skanky of me. But I've been so busy, and I don't have time to write about.. what I'm writing about. And anyway, writing has taken a backseat to drawing.. as usual. At least I am writing on my main blog and even that is tedious enough. It's hard to keep up AND all the writing I would have posted here, I guess I'm posting there. Plus...What was I thinking to think that I would write about writing? I guess I was thinking--that-- when all these thoughts were stuck in my head. And now that they are freed on a daily an almost daily basis I am glad to write here... that I am really.. writing..HeRe!

Where does writing come from?

The images, the experiences, the people, the places,
the emotions...up and down ,
the beauty, the ugly, the surface, the deep,
the impressions that stick... there in the brain
and here in the heart.

Left Brain Speaks

Did you know that when you write you are using different parts of your brain for different tasks?

The left brain processes information in an analytical way.
It is good at logic, numbers, and organizing information.
It breaks things down into their tiniest aspects.
It is a microscope.
It is critical. It is harsh.
It is raw. It is brutal.
We're talking real critic here. And it's often said that you are your own worst critic. You can thank your left brain for that.

Left Brain - "But hey, at least I look good!"

On the other hand, the right brain is intuitive. It processes things in whole as opposed to parts. It puts those tiny little pieces together in a rude often d-i-s-j-o-i-n-t-e-d way. It is creative and expressive. Your right brain is a good idea waiting to happen. It's that light bulb. Whenever you feel a rush of rambling thought, your right brain is speaking. So listen up cause that's where your best ideas come from.

Right Brain- "It's hot in here. I think you should take a nap."

And sometimes it's not the most coherent, pertinent, or timely information either. But let it flow anyway.

In order to be an effective writer, both sides of your brain must work together. Ahhhh, but not at the same time. Right Brain is responsible for brainstorming and your first draft. So start in right brain mode and write whatever lands in your mind. Don't stop. And be careful not to let the critic (left brain) intrude. He'll stop the flow before you have a chance to get it all down.

After you've written all you can, enter the critic. Now's his chance to point out the good, the bad, and the super ugly. He's your stylist and he's gonna make your final copy into a money shot. Now that you have your ideas, you can listen to him. He'll edit, check for spelling, logic, content and so on. Right Brain starts the writing and Left Brain finishes it.

Below are some of my favorite left brain quotes about writing --courtesy of my very own left brain--

"What? That makes no sense whatsoever."

"This is stupid."

"That is the worst thing I've ever read!"

"I'm not feeling the vibe here."

"You'll never get published."

"Writer! Ha!"

If you've received similar quotes from your left brain then here's some advice. Muffle the critic until after the rant. And your words will be on their way in no time!

Right Brain- "Did someone say time?"

All's I Wanna do is Write

I have so many words in my head that sometimes
my brain is like a door that never closes.
I wish I could say I like it that way.
But it's hard to engage in a normal life
when all's I want to do is write.

Whenever I have an curious thought
I can hardly focus on anything else.
Whenever I am inundated with an array of words
I want to write them down.
I need to write them down.
I have to
write them down.

Often I can't fully concentrate again--until I do.
Like flies buzzing about my head.

It's like the world is moving so fast around me.
But I just stop. And when I stop -- there is no time.
The hours become minutes when the words become real.
And when I change them from thought to form
I feel a bloom of excitement.
Then it flies away again.

If I don't write them I lose them.
And they are gone forever.

Writing about Holes

Yesterday I noticed that I was wearing socks with holes in them. I figured it might make an interesting post, and the rest is history.

At first they were just holes, then a theme emerged as clutter reared its ugly head. And I went with it. I had to edit this entry several times because I misspelled several words and I felt that my point was not as clear as it could be. After a lot of revision I was happy with the final product.

Cat

Today I wrote a thank you note to Cat (A.K.A. Cathy). This week she's featuring my main blog...sketchblogs.com... on her site-- Hey Monkey! I was so exicited when I clicked over to her site and saw Sketch Blog of the Day as her first feature...I was honored. So I decided to write a public THANK--YOU in return. The note was easy, but the drawing... that's another story!

SBOD

My newest category is called SBOD which stands for Sketch BLog of the Day -- Writing Process Log. This is where I will write about the daily (or almost daily) sketch of the day. I will include the 5 ws and the h----- who? what? when? where? why? and how? regarding the writing on my main blog...sketchblogs dot com. I have a drawing process log too-- that will detail the drawing process for the entry that goes with that particular sketch.

The Pores on my Face

Today I couldn't think of much to write about... so I wrote about my face...No kidding----the pores-on my face. I felt like a slacker since I hadn't posted on my main blog since Jan. 8...It's supposed to be a daily blog thing, but right now for me daily equals about every two days...But I'm working on it, and well--I did write--- something.

Soon

I 'm almost satisfied with my blog design and drawing style... For now--Anyway.

I'm mulling it over--the ideas-- and finally I think I'm getting somewhere. And things are finally coming together and soon I will be free to write MORE--everyday. Soon I will be able to Bring it on ... Soon I can flap my wings and fly... Soon I can write like fire and draw like water...Soon ...

TopTHREE

My top three reasons for not writing today>>>>

1. I'm still designing my blog(s)...Can you say "Enough Already!"
2. Today I'm drawing.
3. My left brain is still trying to sort through my right brain's musings... Meanwhile---my right brain just wants to chat, read blogs, draw pictures.

No wonder there's no writing in sight....I'll try again later.

Later!
